EMDR and DBR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR has been shown to be effective in treating trauma and other difficult emotions caused by adverse life experiences. When something traumatic or emotionally distressing happens, the memories can become 'stuck' in the information-processing system of the brain, along with the emotions and physical sensations of the original experience.
EMDR therapy appears to function similarly to what happens in sleep during the Rapid Eye Moment (REM) stage, which is the sleep phase where your brain is processing information. Neuroscientists believe EMDR works as an accelerated, conscious version of REM sleep that allows your brain to revisit distressing events and reprocess them safely in the now.
In EMDR therapy, by using eye movements (or audio beeps/self tapping) while thinking about the distressing experience, we stimulate the brain by activating two sides of the brain. This is thought to help remove the block and the brain's neurons can then move towards adaptive healing (which is the brain's innate, natural response) when processing a memory.

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)
DBR is a neuroscientifically-guided psychotherapeutic intervention. The "deep brain" refers to the brainstem structure that is involved in basic survival responses and emotional processing. DBR works on accessing and processing traumatic experiences by tracking the original sequence of physiological responses that occurred when the brainstem was alerted to a threat or distressing experience.
In DBR therapy, we will focus on tracking this sequence together and work on releasing the shock, distressing emotions and physiological responses associated to the traumatic event in a safe way, allowing for deeper healing of emotional wounds.
